PLAN DRAWING OF THE HEBE SEAT |
THE SEAT IN FINAL PREPARATION . |
One example of the Creative Education Model in operation; is my recent project THE HEBE SEAT, which is being constructed in collaboration with the UWI Engineering Department, Carpentry Shop and Machine Shop. I have been there 42 days. In that time I have cut, talked, listened, shared, pound, glued, guillotine, welded, filed, sanded into shape a prototype. We're know in the process of constructing the actual Hebe Seat. I have gained immense confidence as an artist, a designer, a crafts person. I can step forward and with a little patients approach another project with the understanding of how the materials can work. I have been educated through a process, with the men in the carpentry shop, who have shared their years of knowledge with me. The is the Creative Education Model at its best. In all this have been Math, English, Materials, Biology of Wood, Physics etc. Words like a
CUT LIST - a list of the materials to be cut on the table saw (got to get one of that); like one of the men mentioned, you get this right your job can be done in no time,
OFFER UP - to size up the work, see how it sits, considering the measurements and how it size up to the rest of the work.
THE LEGS. |
This
is always evolving – Monday 1st May 2014
8principles
Is based on allowing the student to
come to their conclusions, its democratic; which means the students speak about
their internal self in a external word. How they are connected to the 8
principals.
1.
Ethic
– Is a sense of value; here we delve
into the operational mode of things, understanding that there are things that
operate well and there are those that don’t. Lets figure what that is through
dialog and projects.
2.
Morality
– As defined as ones internal set of
values, which guides us through; relationships, environment, gender, children,
dog.
3.
Spirituality
- Is the internal private relationship
we have with nature, physical environment, gender, children, dog.
4.
Philosophy
– is the voice that speaks for my
ethic, morality, spirituality.
5.
Gender – Will explore
men and women, from the historical shaping of roles.
6.
Sociology
– How our society functions, how our communities functions, our villages, our cities,
our towns. How we’re part of that functioning.
7.
History
– Will look at the past of Trinidad and Tobago; the Caribbean.
8.
Critical
Thinking – will allow the student to share
their thoughts on all these topics, seeing where things can improve etc.
These 8 principles overlap each other
in one way or the other, history and sociology, history, sociology and gender,
etc.
The 8 principles are at the centre, at
the periphery will be the academic subjects – math, English, Languages,
wood-shop, Welding, Industrial Concept, Agri-Culture, Art-Design, Biology,
Science, Business/Economics.

THE MAIN BACK REST. - here we welded three part together |
THE NEW
ART
COURSE
Project base – the
teacher opens up a dialog with the student allowing the conversation; to be
free, open, and democratic; allowing for all the principles to be covered.
One
example: The exploring of ethics.
What
are your thoughts on ethics?
Point
out good/bad design in your community; student go into their communities and
document, camera on phone, cheap camera bought on school budget or go on a
field trip.
Is
it good or bad due to its ethics?
THE BOX PROJECT
Let
us look at the box, what are your thoughts on the box; explore all 8
principles.
The
students are then asked to develop a box; which will facilitate their cultural
uses. Use the facilities in the school, wood shop, paper (art class), metal
etc.
At
the presentation of the box all 8 principles are to be commented on.
