CARNIVAL, THE CITY AND THE NEO LIBERAL CONSTRUCT 2012

CARNIVAL, THE CITY
AND
THE NEO-LIBERAL
CONSTRUCT

Carnival has been spoken about in very desperate terms in private and public conversations. What has surfaced is an interesting interpretation
of our education system, post-colonialism, independence, economics,
market demand
and
neo-liberalism - Which dictates that we follow
the global trend at the risk of indigenous culture.

WHICH OUR STATE
HAVE UNWITTINGLY SIGNED US UP FOR,
THROUGH INTERNATIONAL TREATIES.

This walk takes us from Flag Staff residence into St James to the Savannah, into Independence Square, back up to Green Corner, along
Park into Aripita them up to Tragarite, then West back to Flag Staff.
this took- 12-7pm

CARNIVAL HAS BECOME
PRIVATE SECURITY.
TONS OF YOUNG MALES ADORN THEMSELVES IN BOOTS, HATS, BATONS, SOME DRESSED BETTER THAN MOST ROAM THE STREET AND THE BANDS, WITH FANCY TITLE AS
ENFORCER,
GROUP COMMAND,
INTERNAL TACTICAL.

IN SOME WAY THIS IS ANOTHER FANTASY PLAYED BY THE YOUNG MALE,
ONE TO BE PAID,
THE OTHER TO HOLD POSITION OF AUTHORITY.
AS ONE FRIEND MENTIONED THESE MEN WOULD HAVE PLAYED CARNIVAL IN THE TIMES GONE BY.

NOW THEY STAND ON THE PERIPHERY HOLDING BACK US FROM US.

THE BODY FORM
THE DEMOCRACY OF THE FORM IS STILL THERE,
ALL BODY TYPES PLAY THEMSELVES AND CAN BE SEEN.
ALTHOUGH THERE IS PEER AND INSTITUTIONAL PRESSURE FOR THE BODY TO LOOK A CERTAIN BODY TYPE.....
SEXY.

THE STREETS IS OPEN FREE TO ROAM AND SPREAD OUR WINGS.
ALTHOUGH THIS WAS CHALLENGED AND MANY AT TIMES YOU FOUND YOUR SELF TO THE PAVEMENTS.
CAUSE BANDS WHERE SO LARGE, AND THE STUPID YELLOW VELVET ROPE STOPS YOU.

QRC-
HERE THE WORKERS
RESTED AND EAT.

HERE WE SAW THAT DIVISION THAT IS VERY APPARENT IN CARNIVAL

THE DIVISION BY CLASS

 TRADITION WAS THERE.

 DEMOCRACY OF PEOPLE
PEOPLE, PEOPLE MERGED INTO THE CITY
WE CAME FROM ST. AUGUSTINE, THEY MUST HAVE COME FROM WHERE THEY CAME FROM.

BUT INTERESTING THERE ARE MORE AND MORE SMALL COMMUNITY CARNIVALS HAPPENING.

THE DECENTRALIZATION IS HAPPENING.
AND IN SOME WAY MAY HELP IN PRESERVING TRADITION.

THE MESS
WE HAVE TO BIG UP CEPPEP
AS WE WALKED THE CIT THERE THEY WHERE CLEANING UP THE CITY PREPARING IT FOR THE ASH WEDNESDAY,
THAT WAS COOL.

THE GAMBLERS

THERE THEY WHERE HUNCHED OVER THE TABLES, ROLLING THE DICE TAKING THAT CHANCE TO MAKE ANOTHER DOLLAR.

CARNIVAL,
OUR CITY,
OUR COUNTRY,
OUR POLITICS,
OUR CULTURE.

THIS IS THE IMAGE OF WHO WE HAVE BECOME
 HUSTLING DE CULTURE

THE REAL HUSTLE

BELOW THE TWO PICS ARE OF THE OTHER SIDE OF THE STORY THE HUSTLE OF MAN AND WOMAN, SELLING THEIR SKILLS OF FOOD MAKING,
BAKE AND SHARK,
CORN SOUP,
CHICKEN & CHIPS,
MAUBY,
PIES.

A FRIEND TOLD ME WHO WAS DOING RESEARCH THAT PEOPLE TOLD HIM THAT PEOPLE WHERE TO LAZY.
THAT IS SOMETHING WE CANT SAY AROUND CARNIVAL.

WHEN WE SEE THIS.
THE QUESTION I ASKED IS WHO SAID THAT WHERE THEY MIDDLE CLASS

THERE WAS NEW DESIGN THAT WILL I HOPE IN THE FUTURE CHALLENGE THE
TRIBE,
BLISS,
FANTASY,
AND THE REST OF BANDS WHO FEEL THAT THEY HAVE  SOME RIGHT TO CALL THEMSELVES
DESIGNERS.

AND NOT SEE WHAT THEY REALLY ARE

 HUSTLERS

HUSTLING A RIO DESIGN.

THERE WAS PLENTY OF WALKING TO DO.

THERE IT WAS TO SEE
STILL IN THE VIEW OF MY EYE.

MAS MAKING.

IN THE FORM OF THE BODY.

THE BODY WAS TELLING A STORY THAT START A LONG TIME AGO.
CARNIVAL IS UPTOWN
AND
DOWNTOWN.

IN ONE THERE IS AN EMPTINESS OF CELEBRATION
IN THE OTHER THERE IS A RITUAL,
THROUGH THE BODY THE RITUAL IS SPELT OUT,
IN SOUTH AFRICA THEY TOI TOI,
HERE THE BODY RITUALIZED SADNESS, MARRIAGE, LOVE, ANGER AND DEATH.

CARNIVAL IS THE MEMORIALIZING OF A LONG FORGOTTEN LANGUAGE.

LOST IT SPEAKS TO US UNCONSCIOUSLY IN OUR DANCE.

IT IS HERE THAT I KNOW WE NEED IDENTITY POLITICS IN OUR COMMUNITIES.

THE OLD INDIAN

I SAW HIM THERE AND I WAS PROUD,
I WONDERED THOU IF HER KNEW THE INDIAN LANGUAGE AND THE MANNERISM THAT GOES WITH WEARING THE OUTFIT.

BUT IT WAS GOOD TO SEE THEM BOTH THERE.

THE MAS CAMP.
AS COMMUNITY,
TRAINING GROUND,
AS RITUAL,
HOLLOWED GROUND,
A SPACE FOR ELDER AND APPRENTICE.
A SPACE TO LEARN IN COMUNIALISM.

THE CITY IS STILL CHALLENGED BY THE SMELL OF URINE, IN AND OUT OF CARNIVAL.

THERE WE WERE, WALKING, COMING DOWN FROM PANORAMA. THE MAN JUST STOPS AND WHIPS IT OUT AND BEGINS TO PEE. THERE SHE WAS, HIS WIFE, GIRLFRIEND. ASHAMED AS SEE LOOKED AT ME, AS SHE LOOKED AT HIM PEEING AWAY ALMOST AT MY FEET.

THE STORY OF THE TRUCK TURNING

WELL IT DID TURN
AFTER SOME GOOD CONSIDERATION AND TALKING, THE STREETS OF FLEETS THAT WRAP AROUND THE CITY IN ONE GREAT SWOOP OF METAL AND COURAGE, SLOW MONOLITH OF MASQUERADE FORCING THE OTHER TO THINK THIS IS THE WAY THAT WE MUST GO.

IT IS ALL A LIE OF MATERIALISM.

ARAPITA

I LIKE THIS, MAN AIN'T WANT TO WALK WITH POLE IN HE HAND NO MORE, DAT BACKWARD.

SOLUTION THAT IS THE BASIC ELEMENT TO DESIGN.

FIND THE SOLUTION,
IMPROVE ON THE SOLUTION.

THE YELLOW VELVET ROPE

WHICH STOPS US FROM US.
THIS IS UPTOWN MASS.

UPTOWN MASS WAS ALWAYS ABOUT BEING AWAY FROM THE PEOPLE.

THE COLOURED MIDDLE CLASS HAVE BOUGHT INTO THIS.

THE ARTISTS BANDS

THE INDEPENDENTS
THERE HAVE BEEN OVER THE YEARS THE RISE OF THE INDEPENDENT BANDS LEAD BY ARTISTS/DESIGNERS.
SMALL, THEY NAVIGATE AROUND THE BIG BANDS,
MAKING LOUD STATEMENTS.
THERE IMPACT IS AS WE SHOULD TAKE OUR RIGHTFUL SPACE IN THE CARNIVAL.

i DON'T KNOW.

ROBERT YOUNG

PARAMIN BLUE DEVILS

ASHRAP.

THE SAILOR MASS.
HAS ALWAYS BEEN A STAPLE OF THE INDEPENDENTS,
YOU MAKE YOUR OWN COSTUME ON ARRIVING AT THE BAND YOU MAKE A CONTRIBUTION.
I DID THIS ON JOURVET, MUD.
I THINK CATELLI DOES THAT STILL FOR THEIR BAND.

THIS IS DOWNTOWN MASS.

PRIVATE PROPERTY.
WELL THAT IS SOMETHING WOODBROOK AND THE CITY HAVE BEEN DEALING WITH, AS BUILDING AND BUSINESSES BARRICADE THEMSELVES FROM WHAT EVER MAY HAPPEN.

THE END
IT MAY LOOK LIKE THIS FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW. HERE IT WAS AROUND 6PM AND WE WERE HEADING BACK HOME.

CARNIVAL AND THE CITY STILL NEEDS TO EVOLVE,
WITH ARTISTS AND PEOPLE STILL ASKING FOR A PROPERLY DESIGN SPACE TO PRESENT THEIR PRODUCT.
CARNIVAL IS NOT THE PROBLEM.
IT IS THE LACK OF DESIGN IN OUR THE CITY,
THAT IS.

OUR CITY PLANNERS, ENGINEERS NEED TO.......

BUT IT IS THE CLIENTELE THAT NEED TO STATE HOW THE CITY SHOULD BE.
SADLY OUR ARTIST STAKE HOLDERS,
WHAT IS THAT, WE HAVE DAT!
